The roots have traveled and follow in the light of the soul. Hearts shine and voices rise, glorifying and testifying to the power. Up in Canada, the fervor burns with a powerful light and "Saved!" captures the gospel sound in a crisp, uplifting and sanctifying fashion. Traditionally of Southern origin, this Northern expression of faith and its message of hope is excellent modern edged gospel. Closer to contemporary blues and soul, Canadaís finest gospel vocalists raise a joyful noise in praise and do it in a moving, foot tapping, ear pleasing way. Recommended cuts include the a cappella opener, "Down By the Riverside", "Jesus On the Main Line" variant "24/7/365" and street bluesy "Righteous Highway." Hiram Joseph lifts Curtis Mayfieldís "People Get Ready" to a higher place as Amoy Levyís angelic voice infuses "Higher Ground" with sweet joy. "Down By the Riverside" is reprised with the whole band and choir. The voices are backed by Michael Fonfara who also pounds the ivory in the Downchild Blues Band, Bob Dylanís bassist Tim Drummond and Bob Yeoman and John Finley from Rhinoceros. Produced by the legendary ex-VP of A&R at Elektra, Frasier Mohawk has gathered a full helping of praise to the Lord. Vocals by Hiram Joseph, Danny Brooks and Amoy Levy soar on gossamer wings, casting aside darkness and raising a revival tent pole on high. This is a treasure even if your soul is more Blue and roadhouse than pearly and redeemed. 7 snaves
